Results
  • Additive manufacturing of a titanium wall built with ten layers and sixty passes using a six-beam laser. Simulated with FlowPhys multiphysics using 1.6 million elements and 1.7 million timesteps. The simulation resolves the melt pool in detail: a sharp free surface tracked by a CFD-VOF method, Marangoni flow, surface tension, wire feed, melting and solidification, evaporation with vapour recoil pressure, and radiative and convective heat losses. The predicted wall cross-section area comes within 0.2 % of the measured experiment.
  • Single-bead additive manufacturing with a ring-shaped laser beam. Powder-fed deposition on duplex stainless steel, resolved at 18 µm cell size. Simulated with FlowPhys Multiphysics using 5.9 million elements and 88,000 timesteps. The simulation resolves the melt pool in detail: a sharp free surface tracked by a CFD-VOF method, Marangoni flow, surface tension, powder mass and heat input, melting and solidification, and radiative and convective heat loss.
