SimuLingua is one of the first Horizon Europe projects launched under RAISE, the Resource for AI Science in Europe, marked by a joint workshop in Brussels on 16 June.
RAISE funds the development of foundation models for science, and the first five projects span materials science, agriculture, environment and climate: AgriScience, EarthGenerator, Evelyn, GenMat and SimuLingua. Two of them address materials — GenMat, led by Politecnico di Torino, and SimuLingua, led by Flowphys.
The launch workshop was organised with the Helmholtz Foundation Model Initiative and brought together Europe’s emerging Foundation Models for Science community, with the five projects presenting their concepts. It was the first time several of these projects had been convened in a joint kick-off — less a formality than a deliberate attempt to let the teams connect, compare notes on shared problems and start building a common FM4Science ecosystem. Contributions came from Helmholtz and its foundation-model projects, the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Jülich, EOSC, BDVA and HADEA.
Being selected among the first RAISE projects places SimuLingua — and the simulation-grounded approach behind it — at the start of a European effort to build scientific foundation models that are open, reusable and physics-aware rather than repurposed from general-purpose systems.
