Flowphys organised the Symposium on Improving Competitiveness of Geothermal Energy at the 18th SEEP conference in Rome, its second year running the session.
The one-day symposium addressed why geothermal — the one renewable available continuously, year-round, and in principle anywhere — still holds only a small share of the energy market, and what can be done about the costs, technical and financial risks, and knowledge gaps behind that. Sessions covered cost reduction, performance, risk, wider application areas, and flexibility and integration within energy systems, with flow assurance simulation and system-level simulation and optimisation among the topics.
The symposium was organised by Per Kjellgren of Flowphys, who also chaired the 2025 edition at Brunel University London. One part of the 2026 programme was reserved for partners in the Horizon Europe project GeoFlexHeat, in which Flowphys leads network and reservoir simulation work.
Flowphys presented twice: SimuPort as an open platform for AI-assisted multi-physics simulation and optimisation in geothermal energy development, and SimuLingua, an AI foundation model for materials science with applications in geothermal.
